Traditional Music, Song & Dance Week
July 18th - 23rd, 2010
PLEASE NOTE: Information on this page currently relates to our 2009 event. Please use this as indicative only for our 2010 summer schools.
Tutors include: Neil Paterson, Pete Clark, Pete Coe, Sue Coe, Nigel Gatherer, Nick Spencer, Pete Shepheard, Alan Jones, Colin McNab, Laura Lockyer, Bernie Hewitt, Wendy Taylor, and Pia Walker (some still to be confirmed)
In 2009, we are strengthening the song and dance elements of the week to create a week that will span the whole spectrum of activities typically found at a folk club of folk festival. Pete Clark returns this year to add his considerable teaching and performance skills for fiddle students, Bernie Hewitt and Nigel Gatherer will be working with musicians to play for Ceilidh Dances. Pete Shepheard will be leading our workshops on Traditional Song. Pete brings huge experience of the Scots tradition to our week. Wendy Taylor will be working with vocal and performance techniques. Pia Walker will work with ceilidh dancers.
We do our best to respond to the individual needs of our students and the exact programme will remain flexible until the start of the week. The following is for guidance only.
Neil Paterson will be teaching smallpipes and whistle. Nigel Gatherer will lead our mandolin workshops.
Mixed Instrument sessions - led by Nigel Gatherer and Neil Paterson. One of the primary focuses of the week for participants is learning on their chosen instrument, an important part of the musical path. But for many people, music doesn't ‘come alive’ until you start playing with other people and other instruments. The aim of a mixed instrument group is getting musicians to discover the joy of playing in ensemble, and we would introduce tunes and encourage a collaborative approach to arranging and presenting them in a unique way, utilising each component instrument to its capacity. Any level and instrument would be welcome.
These sessions will take place later in the day. The morning will be more dedicated to intensive groupwork or one-to-one lessons on one’s main instrument with a variety of options opening up during the afternoons.
Traditional Song. Pete Shepheard brings huge experience of the Scots song tradition and will be encouraging people to sing as well as giving an insight into the background of the songs and the tradition bearers who have passed on such a rich treasury of song to us. As a tutor at the Living Tradition Summer Schools he will give an insight into traditional folksong and Scots ballads as sung today. The class will be given an opportunity to listen to songs and ballads recorded from recent living tradition - from ploughmen, fisher folk, shepherds and from Scotland's traveller community. Selected songs will be provided as written texts with tunes. Several versions of some songs will be examined, traditional style will be discussed and participants will be guided into building selected songs into their own repertoire.
CONCERT by Shepheard, Speirs & Walson

Pete is a member of Shepheard, Spiers and Watson, a group with an unrivalled reputation for Scots song. On the Thursday evening of Trad Music week we will be treated to a concert by them with a masterclass earlier in the day.
Pete & Sue Coe between them offer an unrivalled variety of expertise in traditional music song and dance. During the week you may choose to take Pete or Sue ’s individual classes as your first choice or choose to join in with their group music making and dance activities to complete your own mix of activity. Pete & Sue’s dance sessions are all suitable for all age ranges - with Pete quoting 5 to 85 as his usual range!
Pete Coe will lead workshops for those interested in playing for dancing with a focus mainly on melody instruments. Expect to attend at least two sessions daily to build a ceilidh band repertoire – which will also include some tunes which can also be used for Appalachian and longsword dancing. At other times Pete will be the instrumentalist for Sue Coe's dance classes.
