Guitar and Instrumental Week
July 25th - 30th, 2010
PLEASE NOTE: Information on this page currently relates to our 2009 event. Please use this as indicative only for our 2010 summer schools.
Tutors include: Eddie Walker, Jack Evans, Chris Foster, Dave Dick, Nigel Gatherer, Wendy Stewart, Laura Lockyer, Maggie & Dick Trickey, Pete Coe, Sue Coe, Bara Grimsdottir, Colin McNab (some still to be confirmed)
Many of our tutors are mulit-instrumentalists and there will be options available on a range of instruments. Eddie Walker, Jack Evans, Chris Foster and Dave Dick are our four principal guitar tutors, between them offering a range of styles and catering for players at all levels. Nigel Gatherer will concentrate on mandolin and mixed instrument sessions. We will cater for fiddle, whistle, smallpipes, harmonica / mouthorgan, bass and clarsach. Bara Grimsdottir will offer classes on music theory.
We are planning to add a number of visiting musicians for workshops and masterclasses. We will also be including song, songwriting and performance elements to the week.
Several of our tutors are also singers - although the focus of the week is on the guitar, the guitar and singers are natural allies and song will have its place in the week.
We do our best to respond to the individual needs of our students and the exact programme will remain flexible until the start of the week. The following is for guidance only.
Some of the courses:
Eddie Walker explores American Roots based acoustic guitar music that encompasses old time country blues, ragtime, hillbilly, swing and folk. more information on Eddie's class
Jack Evans and ‘Peerie Willie's 10th Chords’ Jack Evans is perhaps best known for his work with the Easy Club. He teaches guitar at the school of excellence at Plockton. Among other things Jack will be available to teach the 'Shetland' style of guitar accompaniment. Willie Johnson of Shetland started playing guitar with trad fiddlers in the early '30's, but learned jazz style comping and applied this to his dance band work. These are the sorts of voicings (known as 10ths by many older players, often referred to as Freddie Green chords after their most famous exponent) that though originating as jazz chords can be used to great effect with more open folky voicings to create a varied style and sound.
Chris Foster is a leading exponent on an English style of folk guitar using open tunings.
Dave Dick offers blues guitar and bottleneck techniques.
