Welcome

'Living Tradition Summer Schools' is a modern style of event using the highest quality of traditional arts teaching combined with public performance to provide opportunities for participation and learning at all levels. The workshops will offer a quality learning experience and bring international masters of the folk arts to Scotland. The ‘arts workshops’ will be strongly based on the traditional arts – music, song, dance and storytelling – but will also include other art and craft activities, tutors and students from relevant local projects. We hope that we can tempt you to join us!

NEWS

We were delighted with our move to Dundee, 'City of Discovery', for our Summer Schools programme and have agreed contracts to return there for summer 2010. There is a slight change to the dates with Trad Music Song & Dance Week and Guitar & Instrumental Weeks both moving one week later in the calendar to give us three consecutive weeks of activity at West Park, Dundee.

Music Technology Week is again planned to be in a studio setting. Dates for Arts Week are still to be confirmed as is the venue which is likely to again be on the Isle of Arran.

The West Park Centre, is part of the University of Dundee. The accommodation options, and other facilities available to us at a University, give us great scope for enhancing our weeks. Feedback from everybody who attended in 2009 was positive. West Park is a popular conference centre and wedding venue and the food and the staff are as good as it gets.

2010 will be the ninth year of the Common Ground Scotland summer school week. We expect to develop the partnerships we have in place in 2009. These included the Lochgoilhead Fiddle Workshop, the Scottish Bluegrass Association, and SC&T, Scottish Culture & Traditions, based in Aberdeen. The Scottish Bluegrass Association promote an interest in Bluegrass and Old Time music throughout Scotland and increasingly in other parts of the UK. Their annual Guildtown Bluegrass Festival takes place on the weekend between Guitar Week and Common Ground. Some of the American artists coming over for Guildtown will be participating as tutors in our Summer Schools.

We expect our tutor team for 2010 to be similar to the team in 2009. The information on this website is largely from 2009 - please use it to give an indication of the range of activities on offer. We will have a fabulous team of tutors for 2010 and we can say with some confidence that you will have a great time! Come and join us.
