by Ewan McVicar - Issue 22 July/August '97
"Alex Campbell was the most important and influential folksinger of the folksong revival in Europe, admired, respected and loved by his fellow performers and his audiences. An outrageous, hard drinking, hard travelling, hard living man."

The weekend of the 23 to 26 October saw the Annual Carrick Fleadh in rural South West Donegal. This small town came alive with sessions and concerts, with participants from all ages and mixed abilities playing together in a friendly, inclusive atmosphere.
Sunday evening saw people fill the village hall, where a variety of performers kept them entertained with music, stories and songs, many of which were taken from the repertoire of local heroes such as Johnny Doherty and James Byrne.

Clare Lappin has been working away quietly to confirm Patrons for Common Ground Scotland. “I am delighted to be able to report that we have secured the support of three high profile performers, Eric Bogle, Colum Sands and Roy Bailey, who have agreed to become patrons of Common Ground Scotland. The patronage of such big names will undoubtedly raise the profile of Common Ground and so enable us to share our experience with a greater number of people.”

Common Ground Scotland comes to earth in Dundee
Those of us who have endured the travels of the Common Ground Scotland Summer Schools over the last couple of years in particular, have been duly rewarded by its coming to rest in Dundee. Not only that but we can begin to believe that we have found a home at West Park. Home, as in a place where you feel welcome, where you can rest your weary head, where excellent food is served with a smile and there is ample accommodation for the many rich and varied activities on offer.

We are at the start of an important period of preparation for Summer Schools 2010. Our move to Dundee proved to be a good one and we have started work on next year with considerable enthusiasm. We are very positive about our prospects for building on that success and our intention is to start early with all our arrangements for 2010.
