Living Tradition Summer Schools to become CIC
After extended consideration and consultation with various parties, Pete Heywood has decided that the best interests of both the participants and the tutors together with the wider cultural community, would be best served by placing the Summer Schools project under the governance of a Community Interest Company or CIC.
Pete Heywood set up an arts organisation to allow the creation of other arts projects in the early 80s. Company law at that time allowed very few types of legal entities to exist and arts organisations were not able to adequately be accomodatated, other than as volunteer organisations or limited companies. This was recognised by the auhorities and led ultimately to the creation of charities and subsequently cummunity interest companies which are a cross between charities and limited companies. The Living Tradition Magazine was started by Pete with a view to promoting awareness of the folk arts within the wider community. Pete's continuing interest in the preservation of culture and the education of people and traditions led to the formation of a 1 week summer school which ulimately became a charity Common Ground Scotland. After establishing additional summer schools under the auspices of the Living Tradition Summer Schools it was felt that the project could ony realise its potential with the ability to obtain funding and commercial investment. To this end it has been decided to encapuslate the summer schools and the summer schools community within a Community Interest Company structure. It is hoped that the company wil be known as ????
